histories of mythology that have had a formidable influence on the reading and writing of literature.
Northrop Frye is one of the centuries most widely ranging literary critics. His discussion of literary modes, more complex than the one presented here but on which this discussion is based, will be found in his Anatomy of Criticism (1957: Princeton University Press).
