Cabe's comment:

Think about paralysis on our five levels.

    • Paralysis on the mythic level would be terrible.  Here would be the soul paralyzed in its flight to God.  The whole spiritual state of a person immobilized.
    • But let's try it on the romantic level, the level of personal psychology.  Here the paralysis would have psychological implications, as one can be paralyzed by a trauma or psychosis, by fear or even by cowardice.
    • If it were life threatening, it might have meaning on the heroic level.
    • On the realistic level it would include the medical term, something would be paralyzed, unable to move.
    • On the ironic level, it would be perhaps an instant's hesitation.

On which of these levels are we to employ the word?  Your choice(s).
