What's Soloist?
Soloist is the component of the Sony lab system that resides
on student machines.
Virtuoso is the component that resides on the teacher consoles
and controls Soloist.
Why do I need Soloist?
Here are three powerful reasons; there are many
others; we can tell you more in the LLC.
- You can correct orals at home with "click-to-speak".
That is, you can right click RECORD and the program will insert
your voice into the student's tape. Quick and incredibly effective!
(If you choose, you can even e-mail the students their corrections
as an attachment.) Click for an example of a corrected exercise - it's short, in English, and, well, humorous.

- You can make your own pronunciation drills.
We can teach you to make exercises where kids hear a master
voice (yours or from a file you choose), record, then hear the
master voice again, and finally hear their own recording for
comparison. You can also make oral test and quizzes using this
function. All it takes is a sound file. All you need to do is
click where you want the student to insert the answer. The program
follows your one-time directions for the rest: the number of
repetitions of the question, if any, the length of the pauses, etc.
Example

- You can edit sound files - cutting, deleting,
inserting...

We can teach you in the LLC any time you want
to drop by. Rose, Chris, and I all have a pretty good handle
on this stuff. |

You can also try learning it yourself if you like: Manuals
for Virtuoso (the teacher console) and Soloist are available
in the "Teachers' Corner" on the right side of the
LLC Home Page and also here .

How do I get Soloist?
You can always come to the LLC and we'll install it for you or
show you how; we also make housecalls for desktop
machines.
You can use your installed version in demo mode or get full functionality
from anywhere in the world!!! Well, you can as long as there are
no more than 40 PA people using Soloist simultaneously, a rare
event, and as long as you're working on a Windows machine.
If you want to install it yourself, click .
(You'll need your PAnet username and password.)
